Dr Abbas currently serves as Chairman, Department of Thoracic Surgery and Medicine, Catholic Health, New York, where he oversees the clinical, administrative, and academic programs dedicated to thoracic malignancies.
He has a robust research portfolio, contributing to numerous registry-based analyses, retrospective investigations, and randomised controlled trials. Dr Abbas has delivered invited lectures across the globe and holds multiple leadership positions within major professional societies. He is a past President of the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society and currently serves as Treasurer of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery. In addition, he sits on the Board of Directors of the Society of Robotic Surgery and is Co-Director of the robotic surgery committees for both the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
With more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and numerous textbook chapters, Dr Abbas is a prolific academic contributor whose work spans the full breadth of thoracic diseases, including lung, mediastinal, and esophageal pathology. He is particularly recognised for his expertise in applying robotic platforms to complex thoracic procedures, and is frequently invited to speak on advanced robotic thoracic surgery. His continued contributions underscore his role as a leading authority in the field.
